Solo Travel Tips: What I've Learned Visiting 36 States Alone

Solo travel changed my life. That sounds dramatic, but it's true. After visiting 36 states mostly on my own, I've learned more about myself than I ever could have sitting at home.

The Honest Truth About Solo Travel

It's not always Instagram-perfect. Some days you eat dinner alone and feel lonely. Some days you get lost and frustrated. But most days? You feel an incredible sense of freedom and capability.

My Top Tips

1. Start Small You don't have to fly to Bali for your first solo trip. Drive to a nearby state. Stay one or two nights. Build your confidence gradually.

2. Tell Someone Your Plans Always share your itinerary with a friend or family member. I text my mom my location every evening — it takes 10 seconds and gives everyone peace of mind.

3. Stay in Social Accommodations Hostels, Airbnb shared spaces, and boutique hotels with common areas are great for meeting people. Some of my best travel friendships started over breakfast at a B&B.

4. Trust Your Gut If something feels off, leave. If a place feels right, stay longer. Solo travel teaches you to listen to your instincts.

5. Eat at the Bar Seriously. Sitting at the bar counter at restaurants is the solo traveler's secret weapon. You'll get faster service, chat with bartenders, and often meet other solo diners.

6. Document Everything Not just photos — write down how you felt, what surprised you, what you'd do differently. These notes become your most treasured souvenirs.

7. It's OK to Do Nothing You don't have to optimize every minute. Some of my best travel days were spent reading in a park or watching the sunset with a coffee.
